BronxGear at The POINT BronxGear is a design workshop/art factory started in 1991 by, Carey Clark, a woman painter, anxious to explore different boundaries of artistic experience. Now sponsored by The POINT, a Hunts Point Community Development Corp., BronxGear is one example of The POINT's raison d'etre: The purpose of BronxGear is manifold. Primarily, BronxGear is driven by the conviction that fine art, commerce, multi-culturalism and children, fighting for identity in a troubled neighborhood, are the right formula for an energized creativity. The POINT provides on a year-round basis, workshops that provide "at risk" youth opportunity for creative expression, financial enumeration, and nuts-and-bolts business training. BronxGear workshops are based on the premise that children are natural artists, that the tenets of fine art are always the foundation of good commercial design, and finally that the work of professional quality and the work of children are not mutually exclusive. The structure of art as business makes BronxGear more than social welfare programming, rather, a project that has the potential to be self-sustaining and a player in the free market. As a large part of The POINT's visual arts programming, BronxGear is integral to providing a venue for the fine arts and visual design for Hunts Point, a neighborhood known for being rife with urban ills. The positive changes in Hunts Point over the last five years are proof that The POINT, BronxGear, and its mission are helping to affect these changes. click here to read bios on BronxGear artists
