The Strothers Brothers Kevin Strothers Kevin calls himself, "Head Businessman" at BronxGear. Kevin told us this means he catalogs and archives the scarves by giving each one a number, and getting the name of the artist. Then, a photograph of the artist with their scarf is taken, and attached to the catalog file card. Kevin explained that the prices for the scarves are decided by Carey Clark, BronxGear's Art Director. When asked where and how the scarves get sold, Kevin told us, "Carey gets appointments at businesses and other non-profit organizations. We set up shop in their conference room and the employees come in to shop." Kevin is also a salesperson for BronxGear, and says that selling is fun. "We sell a lot sometimes. The biggest day, we sold $2,000. We have our good days, and our bad days." Kevin also handles sales at The Point when events, like theatre or dance performances are taking place there. Kevin says what he likes best about working with BronxGear is traveling (for sales); getting to go and see different places. Asked if he was an artist too, Kevin said that he's made about five scarves himself, so far. Kevin gets a stipend for working at BronxGear. Artists receive a portion of proceeds from sales of scarves, with the rest going to cover program costs. Kevin likes to use his earnings to buy clothes and boots, and as his brother Tyrone reminds him during the interview, jellybeans and Starbursts.
Tyrone Strothers Tyrone is a multi-talented artist and musician involved with many creative pursuits at The Point. Being a busy young man, Tyrone was only able to sit with fresh art for a brief moment. He did, however, show us a scarf he painted. The large, breathtakingly beautiful scarf, titled, Jordan, was inspired by the Queen of Jordan's visit to The Point last year. Depicting the desert on one side of the scarf, and the rooftop of a mosque on the other, Tyrone made the scarf so the Queen could bring back her experience at The Point, with her. Tyrone likes to purchase music studio equipment with the money he earns through BronxGear. |
