Abraham Daniel

In an interview with Abraham Daniel I ask some hard questions --- mostly about why he got started and why he continued with his art.

Abraham started making art as the result of a severe accident. As an adventurous young boy he fell off a scaffold that he should not have been on in the first place. The accident left him in a coma for thirty-three days at King County Hospital. When he regained consciousness he was badly crippled, and it was believed that he would never walk again. With a lot of help from others and his own determination, Abraham was able to walk again, and was dubbed the "Miracle Kid". The down side of his success was that he no longer needed physical therapy, and was released from the hospital. Fortunately, he was released into an art program at Harlem Hospital, the Harlem Horizon Art Studio.

When asked why he makes his art, Abraham becomes animated. He lets out a laundry list of reasons why he paints and why he will continue to paint. The most important reason seems to be that art is a cathartic experience for him. The colors and the viceralness make Abraham feel good. Art chases away the monstrosities, the anxieties, the stress, and keeps him from becoming too depressed.

"Art is unique and positive", says Abraham.

His favorite work is a poster he did for the hospital, and now that he is comfortable in his world of color and images, he has started to write poetry. Abrahamıs work and life are inspiring and it is only a matter of time before he becomes well known.
