Frances L. Deegan My interview with Frances was enthralling Frances once was a Sister of St. Joseph. She lived a protected life. After leaving the religious life Frances began tutoring children who participate in the Harlem Horizon Art Studio program. She had a limited experience with art as a teacher. Now that she has started painting at Harlem Horizon she says, "I cannot not paint. It's who I am." Her art is spontaneous, and once she starts, her paintings seem to take on a life of their own. She claims to run into roadblocks when she and her artwork are out of sync, but if she can walk away from it and come back after awhile, things seems to come back into focus. When she goes back to a piece of work in progress, new ideas seem to flow, so do the colors, and she experiences a sense of euphoria. Art has changed her life. Whatever else happens she doesn't want to live without her art. "It has made my life complete," Frances remarks. She truly has evolved. When Frances first started painting, she was insecure about sharing her work for all the same reasons that most us don't want to share. But now, even though she doesn't want to part with some of her work, she is eager to share not only her paintings, but also her life altering experience. While Frances surely has changed her work in life, her art has also changed her. Frances' art expresses a person that is vibrant and alive, and creating really wonderful pictures of a world that has grown together in symbiosis. check out the other artists:
