Dear Friends of fresh art:

Thanks so much for your generous support over this past year of successful transition.

We are very proud of what we were able to accomplish and we have you to thank for your continued belief in the mission of fresh art. Your donations, service and moral support have been invaluable. With your help, we mounted two large, dynamic group exhibitions and produced six engaging workshops for at risk youth and seniors. We also presented an informative copyrighting workshop for teachers and art therapists, a helpful "How to Photograph Your Artwork" presentation for artists with special needs and started up the terrific sock monkey volunteer group.

For the coming year of 2004-2005, we are very pleased to be co-curating with HAI (Hospital Audiences Inc.) "Contemporary Outsider Art in America: Survey 2005". Opening January 12, 2005 and running through March 15th, the exhibition will feature work by untrained artists with mental disabilities from around the United States. On view at the same time as the Outsider Art Fair, this exhibition will provide a much needed look at art work created by contemporary outsider artists, many connected with non-profit organizations, that rarely have the chance to exhibit their work.

Make it a point to attend our opening on January 12th. And if you are an artist with a mental disability and would like an application, please go to: www.hospaud.org, click on "outsider exhibition", scroll to the end of the page and download the pdf file. The deadline for slides or photographic submissions is October 1st.

Our workshops this fall promise to be equally engaging. Partnering with a new collaborator, The Lower East Side Girls Club, we will be producing a workshop for teenage girls, titled Fresh Reflections. This workshop will combine Polaroid transfer photography, poetry and bookbinding. An end of the semester event is planned for early December at the Bowery Poets Club.

The senior's workshop at Caring Community's Independence Plaza North facility will be Painting Under Glass, an intriguing technique that combines decoupage and painting. We also have plans to start a fine arts workshop with Common Ground at one of their residences.

Our sock monkey volunteer group, hand-sewing sock monkey dolls to sell to benefit fresh art's fine art and craft workshops, will include a series of evening workshops in October for residents of one of Bowery Residents Committee's residences. We also plan a sock monkey funder for May 2005. Visit us periodically for updates on our activities.

We also wish to thank our funders, without whom, it would have been close to impossible to accomplish what we did this past year. Thank you to the Werner and Elaine Dannheisser Trust, Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, Edith and Herbert Lehman Foundation, Manhattan Community Arts Fund (LMCC), NYU Community Fund. And thanks again to all of you!

Hello fresh art friends and supporters,

Great news! Since early July fresh art has been transitioning into our new donated office space in our adopted home at HAI (Hospital Audiences Inc.) in SoHo. Although we miss our gallery/gift shop on West 4th Street, the freedom from the financial burden of rent in these lean times (we love you HAI), has enabled us to take on three part time employees. Jeremy, Tritia and I will continue providing the programming of art workshops and exhibitions for New York City artists with special needs for another year and hopefully, for years to come.

We miss fresh art’s Founder and former Executive Director, Wendy Grossman Warlick who has relocated with her family to Oklahoma. Through the wonders of modern technology, Wendy remains an intregal part of fresh art via her continued participation on The Board of Directors and as a much-appreciated advisor to our new staff.

So we’re hitting the pavement running by opening a new exhibition on October 16th at HAI. The exhibition is entitled "People, Places, Things" and will feature portraits, landscapes and still lifes from six of our participating social service agencies. Our three fine art and craft workshops for seniors and at-risk-youth are in the final planning stages for the fall semester. We’re enthusiastic about our upcoming activity schedule starting in September.

Please make a point to join us at our exhibition opening on October 16th from 6-8 pm. Also if you would like to make a monetary contribution to fresh art, it would be most appreciated since we’re still struggling in these difficult times. Anyone who would like to volunteer their time to help out on special projects, please send us an email. Thanks for your continued support. We’ve been getting by with a whole lot of help from our friends! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Dear Friends of fresh art,

We are sorry to report that due to funding difficulties,
fresh art had to cut overhead costs and move out of our gallery, gift shop and office space on West 4th Street. We left the space on April 30, 2003.

While it was sad for us to leave our first home, it was also necessary for us to do so. These are difficult times for many non-profit organizations today. So many of us have had to make sacrifices in order to survive and be here to carry out the important work we all do.

We feel lucky to have so many great memories of our space--of artists seeing their work up for the first time in our gallery; of artists sharing their techniques at our art openings; of sales of Emily Rankin’s teddy bears, Dana Ditullio’s necklaces, Shirley Birnbaum’s spoonrests, and BronxGear’s silk scarves in our gift shop; of sock monkey doll sewing circles, and of making so many new friends who visited us over the past year-and-a-half.

fresh art existed before we had this space, and despite some obstacles, we are working hard to keep what we do alive. Thank you for visiting us. Please continue to visit us on-line, and feel free to drop us a line at info@freshartnyc.org.
